Contemporary Amperex Technology Limited (CATL), the Chinese battery manufacturer, made headlines in August 16 with the announcement of their latest innovation in lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles (EVs). CATL claims that their new 4C superfast charging LFP battery, named Shenxing, is the first of its kind in the world, capable of offering 400 kilometers of range in just 10 minutes of charging.
The company’s breakthrough technology aims to address the limitations of EV batteries in terms of charging speed and range. With a full battery charge, the vehicle can now travel over 700 kilometers. CATL’s specialists attribute the increase in battery capacity and charging time to a “new superconductive electrolyte formula,” which results in improved conductivity.
The current anxiety surrounding quick charging has been a major hindrance for drivers considering electric vehicles. Wu Kai, CATL’s Chief Scientist, emphasized the need to make advanced technology accessible to all consumers as EVs transition from being used by early adopters to becoming commonplace. “We must ensure that everyone enjoys the benefits of innovation,” Wu Kai said during the launch event.
Available in vehicles in the first quarter of 2024
According to Gao Huan, Chief Technology Officer of China E-car Business at CATL, mass production of the Shenxing battery is expected to be achieved by the end of this year. Electric vehicles equipped with these advanced batteries will be available in the market by the first quarter of 2024.
CATL’s development of the Shenxing battery marks a significant milestone in the EV industry, promising faster charging times and longer range, which have been major concerns for potential EV consumers. This breakthrough technology has the potential to revolutionize the electric vehicle market and accelerate the transition to a more sustainable transportation system.
